Director Spotlight: Tim Burton

Tim Burton is one of the most well known directors in Hollywood. Almost everyone has watched and enjoyed at least one of his movies. Whether it be a family friendly film, such as Corpse Bride and Beetlejuice, or a serious and dark film such as Edward Scissorhands or Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Burton has movies that everyone can enjoy. Burton's films are known for their slightly odd and dark tones. His characters always have little quirks about them, some times these are due to physical characteristics, some times it is a quirk in personality, but often times it is a combination of both. Characters like Edward Scissorhands, who has both the physical abnormality of scissors for hands, also has an extremely introverted and innocent personality due to years of isolation. Then there are characters like Ichabod Crane from Sleepy Hollow, who are physically average, but have a personality that does not fit in with the rest of their society. Tim Burton also always has interesting and unique sets for his films.

The sets for Burton's films are always very extravagant and odd, fitting in perfectly with the overall tone of his films. Burton uses color and architecture to his advantage in order to create sets that are not only completely unique to his own signature style, but also help add to the odd appeal of his movies. The set design in movies like Edward Scissorhands helps add to Burton's overall message. The movie covers topics such as appearance versus reality and Burton's set helps to show this. The castle that Edward calls home looks dark  and scary, however it was the home of an incredibly nice professor and his equally as nice and gentle creation. The suburb surrounding the castle is all bright and colorful, making it look like a cheerful place, however the people in it are not truly happy, as they are all too concerned with trying to fit in.

Whether it be from his complex set designs, his signature tone of odd and dark, or even his characters' appearance, Burton knows how to make an interesting movie that holds people's attention both mentally and visually.
